Surveillance camera on the East End of Charleston
CHARLESTON, WV -
The city of Charleston is keeping an eye on you. The city has a dozen or so cameras the Charleston Police Department uses for surveillance.
"They're the eyes of the police department," said Mayor Danny Jones.
"We have a couple others that are covertly set up because of drug operations," said Chief of Police Brent Webster.
At the 7-Eleven on the West Side they have cameras of their own, but with some of the incidents in the past police decided to install their own camera as well.
"They've had some nuisance violations, and some serious crimes, particularly when clubs close people go over there to get something to eat at the end of the night," said Chief Webster.
Last April, an ugly incident happened at that 7-Eleven. One man shot another man in the face, and then shot a second man in the shoulder.
Police put up a new camera last month, and due to success with cameras in other areas, they feel it will deter future crimes.
"The Impulse Bar which was a trouble spot on Capitol. We had one put outside of that bar and it was helpful," said Chief Webster.
The cameras cost of $3,500 a piece. The mayor says he'd like many more, but they'll make due with what they have.
