UPDATE: Body recovered from lake in Ripley, identified as Charleston teen

The Jackson County Sheriff has released the name of a teenage drowning victim.  Shawn Jones, Jr., 15, from Charleston, died on Sunday.


Divers on scene in Ripley, WV have pulled the body of teen out of the lake behind the WV Baptist Center, they said.

A search for the teenage boy was conducted on Sunday, May 18 after he and another boy were pushing a boat into a lake behind the WV Baptist Center. At some point, the boat capsized.  One of the two teens was able to swim to shore safely. The other boy was no where to be found, authorities said.

Dive teams started searching the lake at 2:30 p.m. The teenage boy's body was recovered around 6:30 p.m.

Officials say the boy was not wearing a life jacket.  The lake is a no-swim zone.


According to emergency personnel in Jackson County, WV the search is now on for a teenage boy who was boating on a lake behind the WV Baptist Convention Center.  He and another teen ended up in the water after boat they were traveling in flipped.  The second teen was able to swim safely to shore.

Dive teams have been looking for both teens in the lake. Emergency personnel also tell WOWK Channel 13 this is now a rescue operation.

The teen boys were originally from Emmanuel Baptist Church located in Charleston, WV. And they were given permission to be on the lake.

Ripley Fire and Ravenswood Fire in Jackson County confirm that dive teams are searching a lake behind the WV Baptist Convention Center located at 1715 Lower Parchment Valley Road  for a 13 year old boy who fell into the water.

According to 911 dispatchers in Jackson County, crews responded to the area just after 2:30 p.m. after a call came in that a teen had fallen into the water on Sunday, May 18. There is no word why the teen was near that body of water or why he fell into the water.
