Lottery hopefuls in Charleston, West Virginia are hoping to cash-in on a winning streak of million dollar winners in the state.
“10 to be exact in the calendar year between Powerball and Mega Millions, so we are very excited about that,” said WV Lottery Spokesperson Randy Burnside.
Randy Burnside said the previous record of big winners was five in one year.
Powerball player Tony Jackson is trying his luck on Wednesday night’s drawing
“I have it right here, here is the winning ticket,” said Jackson.
It may seem like West Virginia is a lucky state, but no matter where you play, your odds are still the same.
Your odds of winning 1 million are one in more than 5 million for Powerball and one in more than 18 million for Mega Millions.
Right now, West Virginia is producing winners similar to states the size of New York, Texas and California.
“Probability-wise we are the luckiest state in the country for those winners so far this year,” said Burnside. Proceeds from the lottery go towards things like state education, tourism and capital projects.
Burnside said how people win is completely random.
If you are superstitious, West Virginia seems to have lady luck on its side. Burnside said all of the big winners this year are residents of West Virginia.
