Ashland, KY man facing child abuse charges

Ashland police responded to the King's Daughters' Medical Center Monday. That is where a 2-month-old was being treated for what they call suspicious life-threatening injuries. Doctors determined the infant had a brain bleed. Police say there was evidence that the trauma was not an accident.

Police have arrested 20-year-old Joseph W. Blankenship. He has been charged with 1st degree criminal abuse of a child less than 12 years of age.

Police say Blankenship is the live-in boyfriend of the infant's mother. He is not related to the infant. The injury occurred at a home on Reeves Boulevard in Ashland. Blankenship was alone with the infant when the trauma occurred.

According to Major Todd Kelley, Blankenship said he may have shaken the baby enough to cause injury when the baby was crying.

The 2-month-old is currently being treated for abusive head trauma, also know as Shaken Baby Syndrome, at Cabell Huntington Hospital.

Social Services has joined the investigation.
