A local church with a history of helping the hungry was robbed of their most precious commodity; food. "We came in Sunday morning for service and noticed the door was open in the food pantry," said Jody Lucas the Pastor at East Lynn Church of God
Once inside the building, it got much worse. We opened the freezer up and we noticed they pretty much cleaned us out," said Lucas.
A variety of meat and canned items were all gone from the pantry.
"It was pretty heartbreaking. We estimate around $1,000 of food taken from us," said Lucas.
Due to the loss, the Huntington Food Bank decided to help by donating more that 6,000 pounds of food to the church's food pantry.
"It was a sigh of relief. It was a quick response. We were very glad." said Lucas
As police continue to investigate who would steal from a place that helps around 50 families a month with food donations, the pastor has a message for those responsible
"All you had to do is make a phone call, it would've saved a lot of us hurt and hardship. It's unacceptable and won't be tolerated," said Lucas.
Due to a majority of the food donated from the Huntington Food Bank the church will be giving out some of that food Thursday, July 24 from 12-3 p.m. to the families they serve.
