U.S. Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld II said Robert Fleming, 30, intended to harm the correctional officer in the June 2014 assault.

A 66-year-old Cabell County man has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for possessing and attempting to distribute child pornography, U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin said.

Chief U.S. District Judge Robert C. Chambers also ordered the defendant, John D. Hayes, to complete 10 years of supervised release after his release from prison, Goodwin said.

Hayes was found guilty in March of knowingly possessing the pornographic material depicting children and trying to distribute it.

Goodwin said authorities learned in 2012, child porn was being shared via Frostwire, a peer-to-peer network, and traced it to Hayes' residence in Huntington. Police discovered a portable USB drive containing thousands of pornographic images and videos of children, he said, while one of the computers in his possession contained the Frostwire program and a unique user identification number, also known as a GUID, that matched the computer to the pornographic information disseminated in March and April 2012.

Hayes had been convicted in Putnam County Circuit Court in 1979 of two counts of second degree sexual assault involving girls aged 10 and 12.

“When criminals like John Hayes download and trade child pornography, they perpetuate the exploitation and abuse of innocent children,” Goodwin said. “Every successful child pornography prosecution makes our communities and our children safer.”

The case was investigated by the West Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, with assistance from Huntington Police and West Virginia State Police. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jennifer Rada Herrald and Lisa Johnston were in charge of the prosecution.
