New food bank director pledges to improve service to 'food insecure' children

HUNTINGTON, WV - While a past food bank director is about to be sentenced for stealing, its newest boss tells us it will be her mission to give.

Cynthia Kirkhart spent some time today with our Ben Nandy about her plans and her struggles as the new executive director of the Fighting Hunger Food bank.

She says she's working to educate potential donors about why children, particularly are poor and hungry children, are starving through no fault of their own.

Kirkhart also says that in order to improve service to the hungry in 17 counties in three states, she has to keep the place open.

"We're going to develop, but general operating, unrestricted funds, are at a minimum," says Kirkhart. "Those are the things that keep our doors open."

One in five children are "food insecure."

Food insecure means not knowing where your next meal is coming from.

Kirkhart says in the area she serves, it's probably closer to one in four.
