When an armed forces serviceman or woman dies on duty, a family's life is often changed forever.
Those moms and dads, aunts and uncles are called "Gold Star Families."
A local effort to honor all who made the ultimate sacrifice got underway Monday.
A $5,000 donation from West Virginia medal of honor winner Woody Williams' Foundation will go towards establishing Kentucky's first Gold Star Families Memorial Monument.
With two memorials already in West Virginia, the nation's third Gold Star Families Memorial will be placed at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North East In Greenup County.
This is a regional cemetery for military veterans that covers a 75 mile radius.
That means the memorial will honor gold star families from Kentucky, Southern Ohio and Western West Virginia.
The local Carpenters Union 472 will provide free labor and has involved Atlas Construction in providing the giant crane that will put the monument in place.
