Experience West Virginia: Jennifer Abney Visits Huntington

Posted: Updated:

Welcome to Huntington, West Virginia! Whether its a stroll through the vibrant shopping districts or one of the award winning and picturesque parks,  you'll find so much to see in this beautiful and historic city!

"While the rest of the state has the exciting outdoor activities like white water rafting and skiing," said Tyson Compton, Pres of Cabell Huntington Convention and Visitors Bureau,"We are more cultural, we were recently named a Certified Arts Community, with quite a few museums in town."

He says, it's a great place for a day trip with lots of really neat local restaurants and affordable attractions that are family friendly.

And, speaking of families Tyson recommends the nearby Camden Park, "It's West Virginia's only amusement park, it's a little over 100 years old and still has one of those great old wooden roller coasters."

And for families who enjoy a little living history lesson, step back in time at Heritage Farms. You can tour a one-room schoolhouse, blacksmith shops, country stores and log homes.

We stopped by Heritage Station to visit the Convention and Visitors Bureau and couldn't resist checking out their neighbor River and Rail Bakery. It's a great place to sit and plan your Huntington trip.

And if you're in the market for local goods, check out the Red Caboose, it's  theme is for "take a piece of West Virginia home with you." About 95% of the goods are made here in the Mountain State.

Tyson directs us next to The Bottle and Wedge .. we couldn't resist checking out the bank turned wine shop that was allegedly robbed by the Jesse James gang in the 1870's. Now that's a historic twist we weren't expecting!

And, no trip to Huntington is complete without a stroll down the streets of Old Central City it's a unique part of the Jewel City's West End.

And for a true taste of the Appalachian flavor why not the Wild Ramp, "The Wild Ramp is the first of its kind," said Brianna Griffith, assistant marketing manager,"No one's ever had a non-profit farmers market before and that's really special especially for West Virginia."

And this market is run by volunteers and naturally wild ramps are a big crop for them!

"Appalachian cuisine is the new thing," said Griffith, "It is the hip new thing, we actually have a lot of displaced miners who dig ramps and then drive up to New York City and sell them!"

So ramps sell for $8 a pound here, but in New York city Brianna says they go for $15- $25 a pound!

Just a few doors down, you can whet your appetite for antiques with shops that have a little something for every eclectic taste.

Before you leave Cabell county, Tyson also suggests another bit of Appalachian cuisine - Hillbilly Hotdogs! And, if you are brave try the Home Wrecker, "It's one of the largest hot dogs in the United States, so very popular it's been featured on a lot of those Food Network shows, Guy Fieri has been there couple times," said Tyson.

After that meal, you may want a walk in Ritter Park. It is 75 acres in size and because of its numerous amenities and beauty its been designated as one of the top ten "Best Public Spaces in America". We can see why .. what a perfect way to end our trip to the Jewel City!

And speaking of the name, Tyson says, "The story goes since we sit right on the Ohio River and had a lot of river activity early in our history, riverboat captains as they approached Huntington said there seemed to be sort of a glow and it looks like a giant Jewel .. so they adopted that name as the Jewel City."
